OUTDOORS | Hot spots fishing report - Fishing/Boating - BradentonHerald.com

Lake Manatee fishing this week has been good. The crappie bite has rebounded somewhat, the bite was not great but we were able to put some good catches in the cooler. The hot bite has been the bass.

Bass fishing has been great the last couple of weeks and just continues to improve daily. With the high water levels the bass are right up near and even in some places in the grass and bushes feeding on shad and small bream.

Fishing shallow first thing in the morning and then moving deeper as the sun gets higher has been working really well for us. As always we are fishing live shiners for bass. With the spawn over the big females are feeding heavy, this is a great time to catch that wall hanger.

Also catfish are biting, and we’re catching some fish over 10 pounds. I also had two saltwater charters this week that produced all the trout, ladyfish and Spanish mackerel that my clients could stand to reel in. We did not however have any luck finding redfish.

With water temperatures in the mid to upper 70s just about everything that swims is biting. Also just a reminder about the Loving Hands Ministry bass tournament that’s going at Lake Manatee this Saturday. Registration is at Lake Manatee Fish Camp. Registration starts at 5:30 a.m. with fishing starting at sunup.

With the springtime pattern in full swing, some of the best fishing action of the year is taking place now. The Spanish mackerel bite has been exceptional off the beach with some measuring 2 feet in length. Farther offshore around the seven-mile reef, the kingfish have been hitting large baits tossed into passing bait schools. Grouper remain remain strong inside state waters for the three fish named above. Remember: Chum and they will come.

Inshore, the speckled trout bite has been fantastic with plenty keepers and over sized fish being landed. Fish the deeper drop offs along sandbars for some nice white tasty fillets.

The full moon will drawn the snook and redfish out onto the flats and bushes on the high tides.
